Katarina started skating ice at the age of five. Her success allowed her to show her skills and get into the Karl-Marx-Stadt special school specifically designed for gifted kids. Her coach Jutta was also at the school. Witt placed second in the World Championships of Copenhagen in 1982. This marked her debut. Since then the elegance and grace of her skating caught everyone's attention. She began to dominate the sport. Olympic Success at Sarajevo, at the Sarajevo Winter Games in 1984, Katarina won the gold medal in figure skating for women following a heatedly-contested competition. Her victory four years ago was even closer. Her free skate was not a success, however her gold medal resulted from the performance she put during both compulsory figures (short program) as well as the mandatory figures. Witt became the first female to take home a gold medal in both women's and men's figure-skating in the past since Sonja Hiene. Hall of Fame Witt competed at Lillehammer Winter Games in 1994 after a successful career as an actress. Though she did not get a medal, she delighted her fans despite coming in seventh.
